ADDRESSING OCCUPANT BEHAVIOUR FOR SUSTAINABLE SPACE COOLING

CoolLIFE Project’s online event

The CoolLIFE project organised an online event on 4 April 2024 to present the progress of the project and its main achievements so far. During this event, Dr Adrienn Gelesz PhD, Partner at ABUD, presented our findings from the work done in collaboration with the project partners on occupant behaviour in terms of space cooling demand, which has a major impact on the energy performance of a building.

The event provided a good opportunity to highlight the main achievements of the project in terms of the research on alternative space cooling technologies, findings on comfort, lifestyle and user behaviour, and provided an overview of the policies to promote sustainable space cooling.

In the CoolLIFE project, ABUD is leading the work on thermal comfort, lifestyle and occupant behaviour, including quantifying the impact of occupant behaviour on building energy performance through energy simulations and integrating this module into the CoolLIFE tool. As part of the project, ABUD also conducted a multidisciplinary, representative survey on the space cooling behaviour of Hungarian households, gathering information on the passive and behavioural measures used by residents in their homes during hot summer days, information that is essential for setting appropriate policy targets when addressing the growing demand for space cooling.

The results of the modelling work show that the space cooling demand of a residential building can be reduced by up to 97-100% by replacing unconscious behaviours with conscious, adaptive behaviours, which can also minimise the space cooling demand in the future, taking into account climate change.

During the event, a panel discussion also took place where representatives from projects such as CoolToRise, our sister project Coolingdown, and the platform “Cooler my city” engaged in a discussion about the multiple facets and solutions for sustainable cooling.
