GUEST LECTURE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GREEN AND BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE (GBI) AT THE HUNGARIAN UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES (MATE)
On 3 May 2023, Francisca Tapia, Sustainability Consultant at ABUD, gave a guest lecture at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences for landscape design and landscape planning students (BA and MA level). The lecture titled “Green and Blue Transformations in Urban Environments for Nature Conservation and Resilience” emphasized the importance of landscape design as an integral part and active actor of nature-based solutions to address climate change challenges such as flooding, heat waves, and air pollution. By incorporating these approaches, urban planners and designers can help create resilient and sustainable cities, which can lead to social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Green and blue infrastructure (GBI) are design approaches that adapt to climate change. GBI includes both green infrastructure, which considers natural and semi-natural spaces such as parks, forests, and wetlands that provide benefits to the environment and society, and blue infrastructure, which involves managing water resources to enhance the resilience of ecosystems and human communities to climate change impacts. By viewing GBI as a multifunctional and flexible system, its impact can be improved.
At the end of the lecture, students engaged in a discussion on what they consider their role as future professionals in climate adaptation and design regarding the urban environment.
