Aria Hotel

Design of glass atrium cover

Hotel Aria is in a culturally-protected building, in the neighbourhood of St. Stephen’s Basilica, which is one of the most spectacular historical areas in Budapest. The glass structure specialists of ABUD – in collaboration with the glass specialist firm Seele – designed several versions of detailed structural solutions to cover the atrium of the building.

The structure chosen was a pure glass cover that provides an impressive view of the historic facade of the building from the inside. The glass roof, not only the glazing panels but also the load-bearing structure, is unique in Europe: the wide span beams are entirely made of glass, and the insulated glazing panels were curved during the lamination process. This light, sophisticated cover fulfils structural, fire protection and architectural requirements, and gives the atrium a unique character by letting the historical details prevail throughout the transparent roof.
