M4 – Bikás Park Metro Station

Glass Dome

Budapest completed the construction of its new metro line, Metro 4, in 2014. Experts were assigned to provide engineering services for the glass structures to all of the stations. The station at Bikás Park was designed with a glass dome. A complex assessment and research study was carried out to optimise the dome according to the following aspects:

structural viability, indoor comfort, smoke and heat ventilation. The dome was redesigned with the support of CFD simulations, solar radiation analysis, and FEM analysis. As a result of optimising the steel structure, building skin and the openings, construction costs were reduced by 50%.
