Rákosrendező Masterplan Design Competition

Making Sustainability a Predefined, Measurable and Comparable Impact

The Rákosrendező Masterplan Design Competition represents a major step forward in the future of sustainable urban development in Budapest. More than a conventional design competition, it introduced a new standard for how large-scale masterplans can be evaluated: sustainability became a predefined, measurable and comparable requirement across every proposal. ABUD developed the competition’s sustainability framework and data-driven evaluation methodology, enabling transparent and performance-based decision-making throughout the process.

Working within a highly intensive timeframe, ABUD assessed all 14 competition entries using computational simulations and standardized evaluation models. The methodology integrated energy performance, microclimate analysis and water management assessments into the competition process, transforming aspects traditionally judged intuitively into quantifiable and comparable data.

Digital data requirements and EU-aligned sustainability criteria ensured consistency across all submissions, setting a new benchmark for district-scale planning both in Hungary and internationally.

Beyond the technical innovation, the project demonstrated the value of close collaboration between expert teams and the competition jury. The process established a shared professional dialogue built on transparency and trust, while showcasing how data-driven insights can meaningfully support urban design decisions. The Rákosrendező project highlights an important shift in urban planning: future-proof urban environments require measurable performance and informed evaluation before construction begins, not after.
