BEHAVE 2023: INSIGHTS ON SPACE COOLING BEHAVIOUR IN HUNGARIAN HOUSEHOLDS

The underestimated social, financial and environmental benefits of building energy renovations.

Dr. Adrienn Gelesz PhD, Partner at ABUD presented the paper ‘Residential space cooling behaviour – results from a country-wide representative survey in Central Europe,‘ at BEHAVE 2023, the 7th European Conference on Behaviour Change for Energy Efficiency.

Climate change is increasing energy consumption for space cooling globally, including in Europe. Did you know that more than one-third of Hungarian households already have air-conditioning devices?

During the BEHAVE 2023 Conference in Maastricht, Adrienn presented these findings and further insights into space cooling behavior in Hungarian households as part of the CoolLIFE project.

The paper was prepared in collaboration with three major academic institutions besides ABUD, the University of Szeged, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre of Excellence, and the University of Pécs, with the participation of such notable experts as Adrienne Csizmady, Lea Kőszeghy, Zoltán Ferencz, Anikó Vincze and and Dr. András Reith PhD.

CoolLIFE project addresses the increasing demand for building space cooling in Europe by comprehensively studying various cooling technologies and lifestyle measures. The paper discusses the results of a multidisciplinary survey conducted in Hungary, revealing insights into residents’ interactions with space cooling devices and building elements to alleviate thermal discomfort, with a specific focus on personal measures taken during the summer.

During the presentation, Adrienn highlighted not just statistics but sparked discussions on the vital connection between user behavior and energy efficiency goals.

People play a crucial role in the sustainable energy transition, and motivation exists within most of us. Let’s collectively encourage this to make a livable future a reality!
