On our monthly scientific teaparty (presentation and open discussion afternoon about the ongoing researches within ABUD) in June our guest Pioneers highlighted their recent research topics. At the same time, we took the opportunity, and made a quick interview with them, asking about their experiences in our ABUD-world.

Gergő Papp introduced many social aspects to the engineers and architects of ABUD. He explained what are the participatory and collaborative research methods he applied during his on site research in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and in South Africa, where Gergő examined the opportunities of these methods for multicultural neighborhoods’ public spaces renewal.

Why did you choose ABUD while you were looking for your Host company?

I chose ABUD as a host, because I felt that this company’s mission is very important in a highly urbanized world with big challenges both on environmental and social side. ABUD convinced me of its team’s strong environmentally friendly mindset. I’m very interested in urban development and planning, but my experiences are related more to the social side of this field. On the one hand I felt that working with ABUD would be a big opportunity to deepen my knowledge related to eco-friendly urban development. On the other hand I would bring some social perspective into their research process.

How do you see ABUD now, from the inside, is it different than expected?

I feel that my expectations come true. It is very challenging to get involved in a project developing an integrated decision supporting tool to increase sustainability of a whole district. It is interesting for me, because I can take a deeper look inside a project where the social and the environmental aspects of sustainable urban development joining together.

What do you think, what will you take with yourself from ABUD after the placement?

I’ll take a deeper knowledge and a methodological experience of sustainable and eco-friendly urban development with myself from ABUD. My idea of the possible cooperation between human sciences and architecture is becoming stronger and deeper. Furthermore I’ll take with myself one of my best workplace memory when the team gave me an absolutely surprising birthday present and celebration on my second day at ABUD. So I think the social side has already been existing in this crew:).
