JUSTNATURE PROJECT’S LOCAL STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP IN SZOMBATHELY
The first local stakeholder workshop took place in Szombathely, Hungary on 14 February 2023
On 14 February, a local stakeholder workshop was held in the city of Szombathely, Hungary, one of the six city practice labs (CiPeLs) of JUSTNature Project. The overall aim of the EU-funded project is to activate nature-based solutions for a just low carbon transition in our cities.
Facilitated by our experts, the first workshop in Szombathely leveraged the common knowledge of the city’s residents and that of the stakeholders, including the local municipality. Their ideas and experience proved to be invaluable in designing new functions for the areas around Gyöngyös stream and Dési Huber István Primary School – two of the locations of the city practice lab. After an introductory presentation about the project, group work began, where problematic urban areas were marked and solutions were brainstormed together with the local residents.
What is special in JUSTNature project is that it is built on the principle of co-governance: civil society and private domains are working together to achieve a positive change in their local environment. Fair societal and structural changes can only be achieved through working together for our common interests: for humans and nature alike.
The project adopts nature-based solutions and interventions: solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions.
ABUD is one of the 20-member consortium with the main role of lifecycle, distributional modelling of ecosystem services, demonstrating the nature-building community model, gender mainstreaming, and stakeholder engagement.
